……. speaking of butt-beating, looking at the outcomes of my Dec.. 27th picks, I haven’t had a Butt Beatin’ like that since I was in the 6th grade when I put a thumbtack in Darrell Waldron’s seat. Unbeknownst to me Ole Darrell wasn’t at school that day, and a girl, Sandy Dysart, came in and set in ole Darrell’s seat. Paddling was the ‘attention getter’ back then and between Ms Oxley, the teacher, and Mr. Brown, the principal my ‘cheeks’ got my attention.

UConn is being essentially unfriendly, doing their best to continue that thumping.

Nebraska is looking to break that trend, for you.

On the flip side, my picks for these couple of days have been pretty solid. And conversely, the Nebraska/BC game is where I'm hitting a wall.

I put so much thought into who had more momentum and who Nebraska was going to lose to the Portal, that I completely overlooked who Boston College was going to have opt out or leave.

As far as the Paddle goes ...

I thankfully never wound up on the receiving end.

I was certainly on "The Fringe", more times than I could count.

And watching kids get taken through those doors and hearing the Thwack!! frightened the living bejeezus outta me.

That wooden board with the holes in it, to help give it less air resistance and extra sting upon landing its target.

I was in school during the time they transited out of the spanking as a punishment.

They stopped using it by the time I was in the 3rd grade.

I remember being in 4th grade, and a couple of the teachers still had their paddles in their desk, even though they were no longer, let's say; "commissioned to service".

My brother, who was a couple of years ahead of me, had to deal with the threat {along with his receiving issues} of the Paddle, all the way up through 6th grade; 7th & 8th grade were separated into middle school by then.

Now that I think of it, there were multiple phase outs while I was starting elementary.

When I was in Kindergarten, the school was K-8

Just a year later it was K-6

I remember Mr, Brown had the handle of his paddle wrapped with white adhesive tape, like the the baseball players wrapped their bat handles so they wouldn’t lose their grip when they swung…….

BTW….. you got a good one going with the Canes and Iowa State, that Cyclone defense and how they use those DB’s is a load to deal with.

It is hard to pick non playoff games. You don’t know who is playing; who is opting out. I just pick em and forget em.

Actually, I think I lean toward not playing the bowl games or at least making players declare before whether or not they are playing in the bowl the week after their last game. If they declare, then they don’t travel with the team and they are effectively off the team. I especially don’t like players taking themselves out of the second half of a game they are playing. Makes you wonder if they had a bet on the game.

Or the thing most are overlooking ...

Particular statistics.

Entering the "Pop Tarts Bowl" Cam Ward was 1 Touchdown Pass away from setting the NCAA D-I (FBS & FCS) all time record.

He was tied with the record Case Keenum set at Houston, from 2007 to 2011, which was 155 TD passes.

With 4:12 left in the first quarter, Cam broke the record on a 4-yard score to Jacolby George. He then threw for 2 more, one to Joshisa Trader and the last to Elijah Arroyo, marking the new D-1 Touchdown Pass Record: 158.

Then he opted out of the second half.

Makes me think, that if he hadn't gotten a TD Pass in the first half, that he would have played the the 3rd quarter, and upon completing one, likely would have opted out of the 4th.

I have two thoughts on this.

On one hand, where it looks selfish, and it is; This was the game plan going in. Meaning the coaching staff was aware of this decision, and was on board with it. They felt comfortable enough developing a package for the second half without him. {more on that in below}

On the other hand, not offering to go back in to help his team finish the game on either of the last two possessions where Miami could have sealed it proves his involvement was purely for personal glory. {after all, they lost without him not in the field of play}

Okay, now here's what I took from the second half, that is being glossed over, because of how much scoring took place in the first half.

Both defenses adjusted {though Iowa State had less to account for without Ward} playing rather well after the break.

The Score as the 2cnd Quarter hit 0:00, Miami 31 - Iowa State 28

As a matter of fact, although Not Ideal, Miami gave up 7 points in each of the final 3 quarters. Whatever adjustments they made after the 1rst, seemed to work. And with the offense having the turnovers they did in Plus Territory for Iowa State, to be leading by 3 points at the half was almost implausible.

The total score in the second half was 24 points combined between both teams. Which is less points given up by either team in the first half, alone.

As bad as the defenses were playing, they plugged the gaping hole in the dam, leaving a trickle the rest of the way.

Again, for ISU, how much of that had to do with Cam Ward not finishing the game is up for debate. What can be said, is they did enough to win it in the end.

Yeah, it's just the minor leagues at this point. And it's sad.

I haven't watch very many of the bowls to date. I used to watch them all. I just am not going to help the networks sell soap when players are opting out or taking themselves out early. If they don't care, neither do I. Last year during the Mizzu game with Ohio State taught me a lot about caring.
