See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

Re: Bowl Games?
The problem you get is when they start this, it will expand. Someone will feel slighted because the #5 team thinks they should have been #4 or this conference gets two teams in and the two teams didn't play each other. Something like that and so they add two more teams. Then the same thing happens all over again.
It happened the same way with the BBall tourney. They are still trying to get support to expand the field, even at 64 teams. It will never end.

Re: Bowl Games?
Spence you state that the positive of the bowl system is that 64 teams are allowed a chance to play, but in the next breath you are criticizing the NCAA BB tourney. You think this is bad. Seems to me to be contradictory. I do understand that basketball and football are two different games.Spence wrote:The problem you get is when they start this, it will expand. Personally, I would have more interest in a college football game between two teams playing to advance to the next round, as opposed to those same two teams playing in the Humitarian, Poinsettia, or Meinike Car Bowl game.
Oh well, I have my opinion and you have yours. We disagree and neither will be changed by anything that is said.
If I thought for a minute that a football playoff would ruin college football, I would surely be against it, but I simply don't see that as the case. I think eventually the BCS will expand to a 4 team playoff, from the current 2 team playoff. Then it will probably get to 8 and then 16. Sixteen is probably were it will wind up. I may not live long enough to see it, but surely would watch every game with more interest than I currently do with about 20-25 meaningless bowl games.

Re: Bowl Games?
The fundamental difference between basketball and football is you can play basketball games every day. It is why you can have a basketball playoff and not a football one. ..and you are right....it is a dead horse..the college presidents have overwhelmingly opposed....

Re: Bowl Games?
My point with the basketball tourney is that they keep expanding it as well. The same would happen in football. Football wouldn't stop at four - as you stated.
I do think from strictly a fan standpoint, at least the fans of perennial top 10 teams, would be very exiting. It would certainally be a TV draw. Playoff's, though, would destroy the bowls and the bowl experience for fans and players. No team would want to travel cross country to play a playoff game. As an Ohio State fan, if we are a top seed, then I want home field. I don't care what month it is or how cold and nasty it is in the winter. Northern NFL teams love to host playoff games because they think it is an advantage when a team not used to December and Janurary whether come north. The northern CFB teams would want that as well. The bowls-any bowls - would not survive.
If playoffs ever come to the NCAA they would have to cut D-1A teams to 25-35 teams to have a fair comparison of talent. The money to teams that are not among the top 25-35 teams would dry up. That would also hurt the 1-aa playoffs because they would be competing with the lower 35-119 for dollars. Playoffs are a win for TV in the short run, but long term CFB is a regional game and the money lies in regional support.

The Zips played a good game, Jason. CMU got a little lucky.
What do you think of Akron next year? I see them competing with Bowling Green and Miami OH for the East title next season.

Re: Bowl Games?
So what's everyone's thoughts on Bowls now, after this huge shakeup with LSU??
Mine:
Sugar: LSU v. Virginia Tech (SEC/ACC champs)
Orange: Georgia v. Boston College (At-large bids)
Fiesta: Oklahoma v. Hawaii (B12/WAC Conf Champs)
Rose: USC v. Kansas (Pac-10 Champs/at large bid)
Natioinal Championship Game: Ohio State v. West Virginia
If Tennesse beats LSU, then replace LSU for Tenn....It should not affect the Georgia bid since they only have 2 losses, and LSU would then have 3. Meaning they would most likely have to settle for the Capital One(Citrus) bowl.

Re: Bowl Games?
Yeah, I forgot about the ACC tie-in. They probably would not care about VT/Ga either, since they played last year.

Re: Bowl Games?
I think you have the Hawaii Oklahoma Fiesta bowl right...that would be a great match up for a repeat of last year..talk about pressure on Oklahoma........and...having watched the cold and wet Washington and Washinton State apple cup...ugh..the huskies are terrible...despite my earlier comments...Washington next week in Hawaii is going to be like a turkey ready to be carved up...Washington's secondary is awful......if they do not put a rush on Brennan every play...I do not think there is any hope....the one thing that we saw with the Boise game was...Hawaii has very good receivers...that is the half not often mentioned..

I also left Mizzou out, so I might be thinking on this some more. What good will it do? NONE. But it's fun anyway.
Man it's late....

Hawaii does have very good recievers. It has to be that way for a QB to throw for that many yards. I think Hawaii will beat Washington, they are a team who went from believing the were good earlier to a team whon't believe. They could make the game close if they could get some of that back, but Hawaii will score on their defense. Locker will be a good QB on day, he has to become more of a passer then just a thrower.

Re: Bowl Games?
I have heard some strong rumors that the Rose is looking at Illinois to fill the extra spot in the Rose if they lose Ohio State. I guess it depends on whether or not Illinois qualifies under the new rules.

Re: Bowl Games?
If Hawaii should draw Oklahoma, Hawaii will get there Hula handed to them. OK 59 - HAW 27
*Hawaii is not this years Boise State!!! Boise could have played with anyone last year, great and imaginative coaching, players with heart (and more ability than given credit for) who really believed in themselves, their fellow players, and coaches. And they approached a game with many dimensions and angles.
Hawaii-throws the ball! Yes, extremely well. But you can prepare for that! A team like 06 Boise St. and you really shouldn't waste your time. Practice your plays and look for rhythm and then just seek out cold beer for a month!
-While no where near the off field human tragedy and triumph of Marshall, I' still pay to see "Broncos" on the big screen. Overcoming is overcoming and triumph is triumph, I don't need the tragedy.
If I ranked teams on ability I'd have a hard time separating Oklahoma, Georgia, and USC. Who I feel have an edge in recent play compared to LSU, Ohio St., Mizzou. (Leaving WVU out of course to remove bias.) {This would not be my ranking order in terms of body of work.}
