Deception
I was watching Barak Osama painting a wall in the news today. He was saying that he painted professionally when he was seventeen. He also said he made the minimum wage for the time - 4 bucks an hour. Being that he and I are only a year apart in age and I worked a minimum wage job also, I remember making $2.90. I thought maybe his state made more then the federal standard. So I looked it up the minimum wage in 1979 and he lived in Kansas at the time and Kansas minimum was actually below the federal wage (not sure how that is possible) at 2.65 an hour. Even if the $2.65 is wrong, it isn't likely it was four dollars. It makes me wonder if a guy would lie about something so trivial, what else he would lie about.
I didn't care for Mr. Obama's politics from the beginning, but I also believe you have to judge a man by what he does in his life and let him have a chance to prove himself. This doesn't prove anything, but you have to wonder why he would even say something like that when it is so easy to check.

Re: Deception
It's called pandering.

They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

Re: Deception
Anyone even close to my age would have to remember their pre career wage and know that he did tell the truth.

Re: Deception
Well, this is coming from a guy that says gobbedly-gook (is that right spelling?
) and gets lauded for it. Whether it be about personal responsibility, "yes we can", "hope", or the country coming together. I think by "country" he means left-thinking individuals. Having Rick Warren at the inauguration is a bunch of window dressing. We'll see what Obama accomplishes of substance when he gets into office.

Re: Deception
Obama might have a decent memory.
Many contractors wrongly called workers "independent contractors" and paid them as "exempt" employees. USDOL has been handcuffed by staffing levels in investigating improper use of the "independent contractor" form in employment.
State staff only get involved when someone files for a federal/state benefit like unemployment compensation and no record is found of their employment because the employer paid no payroll taxes, maintaining that the individual was an "independent contractor" and not an employee. It has been a very common occurrance over the years. State investigators, as well as the IRS, use Common Law tests to determine employer-worker relationships.
There has been no real teeth in enforcement. If caught, the employer is ordered to pay the estimated payroll tax (something he would have had to do anyway)...so it might seem worth a gamble.
Workers Compensation and IRS review may be another another story. The fines can be substantial for an employer who mislabels someone a contractor to avoid paying Worker Compensation premiums and IRS requires withholding for employees.

Re: Deception
No matter what he actually was paid, Obama said he received the minimum wage which at the time was $4.00 and it wasn't it was $2.90. That has nothing to do with being paid under the table. The minimum wage in 1979 was $2.90 and I found no state that was paying $4.00 dollars.

A misremember...I've had a few since the longer my past gets, the more of it there is to get right.

It is rare to misremember the pay of one of your first jobs. It is kind of like remembering your first car or your first girl friend. I'll give you that it is trivial at best. But it is another example of a politician being out of touch with the real world. No different then most others who have served.
The media have set the bar so high on this guy that it will be impossible for even the staunchest supporter to not be disappointed with him in the end. People actually think he can fix the economic system. Like the guy he follows he will fail because the president just doesn't have any control over the system. Any president that thinks bailing out companies is a way to fix the economy is sadly mistaken and Obama like Bush before him, will only serve to make things worse if he tries.
I hope he has the answers to all the countries problems. If he does make things better while retiring the debt, I will applaud him and stand in line to vote for him in 2012. I just don't see how a guy, who wants to borrow from things that have failed in the past, can now fix the future. All of Washington thinks they can keep spend their way out of debt. If they show me how I will gladly change my business model.

Amen to that.
At the age of 80 I know that is true.

Honestly, I don't know what the big deal is. I'm sure the guy has had a busy couple of weeks!

Re: Deception
No question about that and it is about to really get busy.

I still remember my first minimum wage job...it was about 86-87 (dont remember exactly when), but I know that my first job paid $3.35/hr. That's not something you forget, it was 20 years ago. Your first job is not something you forget.
Barack was pandering plain and simple.

Right there with you, mine was 87-88 $3.35/hr...it went up to $3.65 or 3.75 not too long after. I'll give him a break on this recall. Construction jobs fall under many things that dictate what you get paid. You could be a non-union painter, paid as a laborer typically or finisher, and the Employer still has to pay you prevailing rates at certain jobs, municipal, county, state, federal property. He could be referring to that pay, or the pay he was up to when he left that job.
Still, I am rather sure the man is FoS. On this front, he and many others usually go through the process of setting up (cataloging and narrating to staff

My first job was with the city parks dept.
Mowing grass during the summer months.
I was 14 at the time and the pay was $.50 an hour.
My first job on the Railroad was $.66 an hours 7 days a week.
I was 16 then.
