I suppose that one could say that I drink a mixed drink since I drink bourbon with a splash of water. Some who drink it neat would sniff in their purism that my dad's yankee blood had negatively influenced me.

I don't drink it neat either. I like a little ice for sipping. I've never drank mixed drinks and I wouldn't call water mixing it. The only time I really ever drank it neat was out of a shot glass and I don't do that anymore. I don't mind some of the southern whiskey, but I would rather have the Crown.
I had some West Virginia style mountain dew in a quart jar and it actually was some of the best stuff I have ever had, but it isn't available all the time.

Re: Hippies
Jack Daniels, Evan Williams, Makers Mark and George Dickel. I like these the best.
I like them straight, on the rocks, or w/ coke. NEVER w/ water. I don't drink much anymore and thus drinking straight can make for a short night. When I was in the Air Fore during Desert Storm I'd drink at least a quart (1/2 of a 1/2 gallon) every night. Shoot double shots and then chase w/ 50/50 coke chaser. I had all of Hank Jr's CDs. We'd generally get through 3 CDs, depending on the "play that agains." I'd be tore up, start by 7:45 and knocked out by 10...never needed an alarm clock!

Re: Hippies
When I last had some of that Good Ole Mountian Dew, I had my buddy (who was giving it to me) take the rest home w/ him. I have kids and that stuff was so smooth it could be deadly for a kid to get a hold of! Good Stuff!!!

Gawd..yankee boys will screw up anything LOL. Crown is neither a bourbon nor a Tennessee whiskey. No decent southern boy would let a drop of this canadian swill enter his mouth. It makes for a decent ladies drink for women who want the smoothness and don't like the taste of alcohol. And it can be mixed with coke (who would want to ruin a good bourbon or Tennessee Whiskey with coke?)
Give me Blanton's with a splash or Evan Williams Reserve. I will drink Bookers but I have to cut it down with water (125 proof).
The day I start drinking Crown is the day that I will start orderering those mixed drinks with oriental paper umbrellas sticking out of the top. "Oh, bring me one of those blue drinks, dear."
Good god you southern boys take stuff seriously. Football, religion, booze, bbq...did I miss anything?
For myself, as an old hipster, I readily admit to enjoying a good buzz-on. To this day, if someone put a bong in my lap, I'd hit it. I limit myself to legal stuff however (I wouldnt even know how to acquire the stuff anymore), and while I have my standards, snobbery doesn't play much into it. Mostly I drink a local brew called RedHook Longhammer IPA. 6.5% alcohol so it doesn't take too many. There's a vodka I'm partial to on occasion, Luksusowa, made from potatoes rather than grain. I also enjoy a good scotch now and then, but I'm too cheap (and my tastes aren't properly refined) for the single malts. The local wines are also very good, especially the Pinots, but wine tends to give me a headache.
I do like Vodka, I will agree with you on that. I usually get Smirnoff (2nd shelf at best)
As far as beer, if it's not Guinness, I will usually NOT drink it. I paid $8 for a Heineken at the Falcons game about a month ago, and could not finish it.....TERRIBLE STUFF!

The only mix I really like is a HEAVY vodka mix on a White or Black Russian.
The others just don't do it for me....Bloody mary?? I'll just have a V8.
When I see people light drinks on fire, I can't help but laugh.

Re: Hippies
I used to like Heineken, I can't really stand it now. I like Moosehead and Molson (for the frozen tundra beers.) American I like Michelob the best. I can drink Bud for the taste (but I usually get headaches), Yuengling, MGD, and cheap ole Miller (don't know why, and it don't really taste like beer.)

Light somebody's moonshine!

We'd drink Flaming Dr. Peppers and I always told them I'll take mine non-flaming...stupid bar tricks!

I've seen a few incidents!!! These 2 are staples of West Virginia night life.
Beside the bar and flaming drinks, which I have seen go awry...I've been to several field parties that resulted in flaming drunks. I mean you can build a fire with a 15 ft diameter base and yet someone accidentally falls in! They say that playing with fire will make you wet the bed in mountain folk lore...I don't know about that, but watching someone else fall in fire can really make you wet your pants!
