Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
Boise State will play around ten percent of their games against good competition. Most major confence teams play 35 to 40%. it isn't like the majors play 70 or 80 percent of their games againt good competition.

So...a power conference team has three times the chance at having a loss..my point exactly.
Bama would still be numero uno if playing a weaker schedule.

Not necessarily. South Carolina isn't better than Alabama, but for one day they were. That can happen to anyone.

On a different note: where do you figure to displace florida @
They've dropped three in a row. I can't expect much Love for them now. So where does the talking go?
To there problems on the field?
Or, are we going to continue to hear how good they'd be if they still had, you know?
What about Meyer?.. are we going to question whether he's still capable of performing his coaching duties? ( i.e. is his heart still in it )
Should we prepare him a fruit basket to apologize for his inevitable humiliating loss on Nov. 27th, in Tallahassee?
Is the fact that the team he's built around a star athlete going to be his downfall, unless he finds his next, you know, to handle the ball on snaps properly?
How long before the media starts sniffin' down his neck?
Or will the press play the, 'it's a down year for the gators, they'll be back in full swing before you know it' card?
...
Who knows, maybe after billybud's boys get done with them, they'll still have enough wins to get themselves into a tango with the `Canes ... cause I'd sure like a crack at those twits... we don't get to play `em every year.
But, if the gator...... when the gators lose to fsu, chances are they'll have too many losses to play us ( I hope, because otherwise we went horribly wrong somewhere to play a 4 loss minimum team ... )
Then again, florida may not be bowl eligible this season, as, they still have to play:
Georgia
South Carolina
and Appalachian State
I do not put much consideration on their game against Vanderbilt... that's just fluff.
Now, those other 3 games, however, may be the end of the gators this year... before their deconstruction at the hands of jimbo's team.
We always go into how the shifting of power cycles inside of conferences ... but here, in this for instance, we're seeing the power circle spinning around in one state.
Oh, and just to note... So Fla is still not in the conversation...
( God I hope that last comment doesn't come back to bite me )

I know up here in the Northwest, we consume ourselves with conversations of the state of Florida's football teams.

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
I think that, here in Florida, Urban's magic has started to wane. And Myer has had a stranglehold on recruiting.
Kids who the Gators would scoop up are now looking at other programs as well. Good for FSU and Miami.
The problem is that Myer has been stubborn about playing his offensive scheme without having the type quarterback to run it. The Gators are still talented and dangerous, but the pocket quarterback trying to run a mobile QB spread isn't helping them.

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
To say Boise St. is not the best team because of what they have done THIS year is a filter used to eliminate them from the discussion and if we're going to do that then we need to eliminate the fact that Alabama was last years national champion and has Ingram a returning Heisman. An Alabama who's only ranked marque win is over Arkansas who is ranked only because of a win over Texas A&M. Past years give us perspective and by looking at all of your polls every single one of you use past history to judge this years talent. I'm not going to be upset because your not being true with me, but I am going to be upset if your lying to yourself.
also,
If you believe in Alabama, how bout this, Boise St. beat San Jose St. better than Alabama did. Empirical, "current year", head to head evidence that they are as good as Alabama. Better if your a stat person, but I'll go with deserving of a chance to prove themselves.

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
Look guys...the issue isn't "being good"...the issue is being tested and winning.
When you play games with teams who are within 7, maybe 10, points of you, the whole dynamic of a perfect season changes. An off day, a turnover, a bad call, a couple of injured players, can all lead to a loss against a team that is reasonably close in talent. It takes either an unusually powerful team or an unusually lucky team (or both) to win out with this kind of schedule.
But when you play a slew of scut teams who aren't within 30 points, you won't have one of those losses. Not many good teams will drop a game to a 30 point underdog.
South Carolina isn't a top five team, but they are a team to be reckoned with...and so is Arkansas, Ole Miss, LSU, & Auburn. Alabama could not have a slightly off day against this row.
Boise is in the middle of a run against New Mexico State, Toledo, San Jose State, La Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, and Fresno State. A murderer's row (if you are a serial killer interested in small boys).
The WAC is so delusional! They have an interstate in Hawaii? That keeps me up at night.

Exactly. And I do not doubt Boise State is good and maybe very good, but when their last three games they have been an average of 40 point favorite, it is hard to tell.billybud wrote:Look guys...the issue isn't "being good"...the issue is being tested and winning.

They have been covering that line each week. They have the third best ATS record, only behind Utah and Hawaii.

But the issue is being good. The BCS is trying to pair the best two teams - not the most tested teams. The BCS says nothing about being tested. They even removed "quality win" from the formula.

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
It is about crowing a National Championship and bestowing upon them a trophy they can display at WalMart. It has nothing to do with good or best. If we went back to the old bowl system we would not have a national champion and would put a bunch of cottage industries of reinventing football games because the results would be the final score at the end of the game. But somehow...that just doesn't work. The rules of the Rose Bowl for the Big ? and the Pac 10 and or 12 were just fine. Even took into consideration a team that was a perennial powerhouse....why did we fix what was not broken?

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
Wrong...it's not being "good"
It's being "the best". And if you play two quality games of 12 (and we aren't necessarily talking ranked teams), are you the best? Did you have a season that allows one to say..."they are the best".
You have to beat good teams to be the best.
Otherwise...I vote for Delaware.

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
It is supposed to be about finding the best, but it really isn't about finding the best. If it were, a system would be in place to find the best. This system is in place to feed the monster. Nothing wrong with feeding the monster, but lets not pretend like it is something it isn't.

Re: Boise State vs. San Jose State
Oh..I agree, Spence.
America, including us on the board, is in love with the drama of a Cinderella story. We all love Slumdog Millionnaire.
It is my fervent hope that the non BCS teams do very well this year....and, in fact, come in at #1 and #2 in the BCS.
TCU vs Boise...the battle of the Cinderella's.
I would love it....the rest of us would annoint the SEC Champ as the "wink" chanpion. But a TCU/Boise NC game will not happen. The drama would be leached out. The media would connive to screw one of those teams just to make sure there would be a David and a Goliath.
