I don't know why he would, or why anyone would, want to go to Vanderbilt. They have a problem with recruiting, always have. It's not coaching, Johnson has been a good coach. They have made vast improvements since he's been there.

The list is believed to include Connecticut coach Randy Edsall near the top.

Edsall is 73-69 in 12 seasons at UConn -- 32-18 the past four seasons.

The Huskies, who are 7-4 this season, will win the Big East and earn a BCS bowl berth if they win at South Florida on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Shannon, who told ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman on Tuesday that he's interested in Minnesota's job, is apparently a candidate for the Vanderbilt job, too.

The Tennessean, citing a source, reported Thursday that Vandy has added Shannon to its list of desired candidates.

Since Shannon's firing, one of UM's seven verbal commitments has de-committed -- Albert Louis-Jean, a four-star defensive back from Brockton, Mass. "It just came down to coach Shannon being let go," Albert-Jean's father, Albert, told Canesport.com.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with Edsall running things. The Big East is down this year, and I don't think UConn's present offensive scheme is what Miami needs to pick themselves up.

I'd like to see a few more names tossed into the hat before we settle here, or, at least be given a clearer explanation as to what precisely the Miami offices are so enthusiastic about over Edsall.

Don't know how much validity this has, but it is interesting. I like Stew...but have no real love for how the offense has been run much of this year and last year. But Malzahn is a special case, I'll take him as I know this would fix any and all offensive scheming and performance. (I'd like it even more if he came and Stew stayed on staff...and with his attitude, that could happen. And mean he didn't lie at all when he said he has no plans to retire. And he is exactly the kind of guy to do what is best for the program. I think Stew can hook some parents that many Coach types would have a very hard time with.) But any of you guys who watch College Football every year in hopes of winning the National Champioships might want to pick up some hobbies. Because Malzahn and Casteel will just crush people. I hate that this sounds like real big talk, but I don't know how to spin that combo down!

STARKVILLE, Miss. —
Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen might have earned himself a new contract.

During Sunday's Gator Bowl teleconference, Mullen said he and the school are working on "a deal that will suit everybody" and that he wants to be the coach of the Bulldogs for "a long time."

Mullen's name has been linked to the vacant Miami job, though the second-year MSU coach has said repeatedly that he hasn't been contacted.

By text, MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin wrote that he and Mullen were having "productive discussions," but didn't divulge any other details.


Mullen, who originally signed a four-year deal worth about $1.2 million per year, has led the 21st-ranked Bulldogs to their second bowl game in a decade.

I think Mullen would be the top choice. Stoops turned them down the last time and I still don't think he leaves Oklahoma for Florida. Just stay away from Petrino, is all I ask.

Schlabach on ESPNU said he believed Mullen would be first choice and Florida would also look at: Bob Stoops, Bobby Petrino, Chris Peterson, and Charlie Strong. Others said they believed Mullen will be the guy. I am with Razorhawk...stay away from Petrino.

I think Mullen will be Gator Head Coach now that Urbie said "no mas".

Mullen is great friends with Foley (Fla AD) and he loved Florida. Unless there is a clause in his contract that would be a poison pill for him leaving, I think he would make an excellent candidate.

I think it's pretty straightforward. Beginning: Meyer realized he couldn't coach the way he had in the past and maintain his health and spend time with his family. He decided to retire. Foley, Fans & Co. begged him to come back as coach, but agreed to lighten his workload. Result: Meyer failed pretty badly as HC. Conclusion: Meyer now realizes he can't do a good job coaching AND maintain his health/spend time with his family. Consequence: Meyer stepped down.

That may not be the whole story, but it makes logical sense to me. I admit I'm surprised by the news, but not that surprised.

I don't think it is the whole story - I also don't think the whole story is any of our business - but people who work at the pace a CFB head coach works just don't go shoot squirrels and watch the kids soccer games. I don't have anything against Urban Meyer, I used to go see him coach in Bowling Green. He is a good football coach.

His wife's family lives pretty close to me and no one there is talking about it.
