Well, Stanford is concerned that Harbaugh is headed for Michigan; They've offered him more money to stay as their coach.

It may not be a matter of what he wants entirely. There have to be offers for him to accept, in oreder for him to take over.

And right now, Michigan is the program who happens to be offering.

Though, there is a rumor rolling around about him being on Miami's short/medium/however-long list.

Those aren't talking heads and egos expecting him to leave for one of the mention programs ... but they are programs shopping around for his potential services.

Urban, at Utah, was a system coach...was he not?

Some would call Ole Shiny Pants a system coach.

Both are, even at Florida. Spurrier, though, has alway known the value of defense, most system guys tend to let the D slide.

Why do you think that is? Is it that system coaches don't emphasize defense or is it that having a good defense is just hard to have?

I don't think having a good defense is hard at all. Defense is much easier to recruit. I think the big reason is that most system guys are offensive "gurus" and for whatever reason most offensive guys who think they have discovered the "key" to winning football don't see the value of defense. They never admit to being beat by a good defense, they say their guys don't execute, had to many turnovers, or weren't focused. It is never about the coaches system springing a leak. All offensive plays ever designed were designed to succeed, defense is generally the reason that they don't always succeed. Those system coaches won't entertain that at all.

System guys tend to come out of the offensive side. They were OC's before head coach.

For some reason...defensive coordinators don't make the transition to HC as often.

Sometimes good DC's are not as mobile. Mickey Andrews and Bud Foster are examples of guys who are "married" to a program. They may be great defensive coaches, but they don't seem to be viewed as head coaches. Hard for a DC from a known football school to leave laterally. A good DC from a smaller school to a big name program is the main possibility unless there is a head coach change that leaves a good DC looking for a new team.

For exampe...Jeff Casteel at WVU is a good DC...but I don't see him moving laterally. Will Muschamp, at Texas, won't be a DC elswhere.

FSU tried to get Kirby Smart from Bama and that was a no go...did lure Mark Stoops from Arizona but I think that he wanted to make his own name away from his brother.

So why don't system coaches just have some hot shot DC by their side? Leach + Bud Foster would be a combo that's hard to beat...at least on paper, right? Do system coaches just have such egos or aversions to another genius in the locker room?

I don't think most of the system coaches think defense is important. Not enough to even spend money on.
