Re: Stupid
Another interview..
"Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher was not trying to be critical of Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, but he stated the obvious when I asked him about the Tressel situation on our radio show Tuesday.
Tressel, of course, has been suspended for five games next season for covering up NCAA violations by his players. One of the lame excuses Tressel used when trying to explain why he didn’t report the violations was that he wasn’t sure who “to go to with the information.”
When I asked Fisher the standard operating procedure for when a coach discovers NCAA violations among his players, he answered without hesitation: “You have to take it straight to your AD and straight to your compliance folks.”
Just think of all the controversy and consternation Tressel would have avoided if he had taken Fisher’s simple advice"

Tressel didn't do what he knew a coach should do...end of that story.

I don't know anyone who thinks he did. No one I know thinks he did the right thing and most think that he has whatever punishment the NCAA gives him, coming.
You have a few hardcore fanatics in Columbus that give Tress a pass no matter what, but most don't believe that way. People are hoping it turns out OK, but most expect him and the school to get hammered.
I've been in Tampa the last four days, Joe Biden was in the hotel I was staying in. The secret service guys we crawling all over the place. We got out of there until he was gone so we didn't get stuck there. You can see why not too many people can get close to the pres or vice.

Just because he has an agenda, though, doesn't mean he doesn't have a point. He did. The way he went about it got him pulled from the "fan" until his contract runs out in July, then he is done for over stepping. Hooley has never liked Tress because of how he limits access to the reporters. Guy's like Chris Spielman could get into practice and Hooley couldn't and Hooley didn't like it. Hooley also didn't like Tressel because he nevers gives a straight answer - which has alway kind of hacked me off as well. Hooley just went to far this time.
Tressel broke the rules and he signed a paper saying he didn't know of any violations. What ever punishment the NCAA gives him he has coming. If he can't keep his job through this, then he has only himself to blame. What Hooley was doing though, was attacking the man. Off the court Tressel has donated millions to his old schools. He has given tons of time and money to causes like juvenile diabetes. As a man, away from the game, he has given back his whole life. He didn't deserve the personal attack. He did deserve to be raked through the coals for what he did. If Hooley would have limited the attack to that he would still have a job.

I am afraid when it's all said and done I believe your man is toast a la Bruce Pearl. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6257370
Pretty sad as I believe him to be a good man.

That is all in the NCAA report so it isn't a new revelation or something they were hiding, but I'm with you that I don't believe he will survive this. I think personally he is a good guy, but that doesn't matter if you break the rules.

I don't think breaking the rules is the deal, it is lying about it and trying to cover it up. I don't think what Pearl did was reason for termination and this is also pretty much on the minor side of violations. Trying to not get caught and then lying when getting caught is the problem. Kind of the old adage that if you admit to a mistake the consequences are much less than trying to cover up or put the blame elsewhere.

Lying and/or covering up is the rule he broke. Tressel didn't lie to the NCAA, except by ommission. Still he broke a rule - a big rule. Probably the worst rule to break in the eyes of the NCAA. He didn't, though, try and impede an investigation by compliance or the NCAA.

Re: Stupid
Has anyone reported how many emails Jim Tressel receives per day? I easily receive over 100 emails a day, which is overwhelming. How many emails does he receive per day from a "concerned fan' about Pryor? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Ohio State players aren't the only ones who received discounts on tattoos. And, I doubt that Jim is the only coach to hear something about it.
All you have to do is look at the ESPN poll to see why this is such a big deal. All the states with big time schools are the ones wanting Tressel gone the most.
These guys were stupid, but this was no Reggie Bush deal. Had this been Pete Carroll, he would've simply stated that someone else was using his email, and continued to deny it.

I understand your point, but how many emails he gets a day isn't important because he was aware of this one and he knew what to do with it. He is guilty of breaking the rule. His reasons for doing so aren't important because he knew the rule and broke it.

Re: Stupid
Here is a good article about how most Buckeye's feel about this whole Tressel thing. It isn't done as ugly as Bruce Hooley did it and it is written by a Buckeye fan.

Re: Stupid
If Buckeye nation wants to throw away their best ever coach over this I hope he goes to coach at Michigan. The only people losing here are the fans who are calling for his head. The same fans who put him under the pressure to win which may have caused him to not report this are the ones now waving the axe.

I don't want to see him gone, but I can't defend what he did. He isn't the best ever Buckeye coach, though, Woody Hayes holds that honor. I don't agree that because the pressure to win was so great he decided not to report. The pressure to win at Ohio State isn't any greater than most other DIA schools. You have to win and you have to do it the right way. I believe Tressel is a good man who did the wrong thing, but there is no defending that he knew the rule and decided to break it. I hope he can survive this, but I don't believe that he can. We will see.
