Does this mean that Arkansas won the Sugar Bowl and get Champioship rings? How about it Hawgs fans? What a mess.

I don't think there was a winner, just to losers.

I realize you were just making an attempt at humor, but vacating wins is really a non-factor. Changes very little and is not really a penalty, particularly as time passes. Now loss of scholarships is another deal. I would hate any bowl or TV sanctions, as that serves as a financial penalty for the other conference members.

99 and 44/100%...for those ivory purists, of sports entertainment is instant gratification. We win or lose, we rejoice or sorrow and Monday morning after a brief water cooler recap, we are talking about the next game. No one cares about vacating wins that are history, and who really believes theOSU won their games because some guy got a tattoo for a stinky jersey and some coach was so self absorbed that he failed to remember the teaching of his mother. No one. In the heat of the season it is always what is happening on a given Saturday. Think any sportscaster is going to say. Last year when Ohio State went 0-14, this needs to be a real building year. Sure they will make up some inane story about stuff that fills in the silence we all long for but they feel compelled to spoil, but who cares.
And when you take away scholarships...who does that hurt? Not the school. Not even the athletic program. Hurts kids out there that have one less chance to go to a formerly prestigious...okay Spence..just a bit more...school.
Want to correct the problems...fire the paid staff. Not that they are pure and white...but when BYU found out their core value rules were being violated...they wiped the athletic department clean. AD's on down. I would suppose the new employees, because they like to eat food with their meals, may operate differently and over time the new ones will forget and house cleaning again. Problem is, few schools clean house. They give it, as my Grandmother said, a lick and a promise and are off to other things.

Biggest question is
Biggest question is: does the punishment fit the crime?

Re: OSU could vacate wins
That is the hard question -there was no crime, but there was disregard by employee(s) of the school for the rules the agreed to follow. Tressel had to be gone, I don't think there is any question. Should Gene Smith be gone is the new question and I think the answer is yes. I don't think Luke Fickle should be gone. There is know one I know that thinks he did or knew anything about any rule breaking. Not sure about Heacock or Bolman. I haven't heard anything about those two, but they are the nuts and bolts guys in the program so the should have had a clue something was happening.
I think the biggest crime is that Fickle isn't going to get a fair shot to be a head coach.

We might see 1 sign at College Game Day with OSU 0-14 but that is about it.

Re: OSU could vacate wins
The vacating of wins is relatively unimportant...(although the zero for forever for OSU vs the SEC is now reinstated).
A loss of scholarships (if kept to two or three) won't really hurt either. As long as there is no postseason ban and lost schollies are reasonable, the Bucks will soldier on relatively uneffected.

Re: OSU could vacate wins
I expect a one to two year bowl ban and losses of 3 to 5 schollies for three years plus probably five years probation. I'm not sure the punishment fits the crime, but it seems the NCAA is going to make an example of Ohio State. I guess that is good news for Oregon and N. Carolina. That thirst for blood should be satisfied with Ohio State. The NCAA will figure they have proven their point.

No bowl loss, I don't think.
Just a few scholarships and a two-three years of probation.

No it won't. When power absolutely corrupts (Lord Acton) it is never satiated by one act of tyranny, if feeds on itself. They will continue to make college football about their authority and not the students until the Boards of Trustees...College Presidents have proven themselves to be ineffectual...say enough is enough.
And as an afterthought, I agree with Mr. Billybud, no bowl sanctions, the NCAA is tyrannical but not with out some savvy that killing one of the largest bowl drawing teams means loss of dollars...that is not going to happen. You punish slaves, you don't kill them.

Re: OSU could vacate wins
The NCAA doesn't make money from the bowls so bowl bans are easier. I can see where they would want to boost Nebraska (new to the conference) and Michigan (who has been down). A couple year bowl ban will loosen Ohio State's recruiting power in the midwest and especially Ohio and PA.
Here is what I don't get - and I know how most around the country feel about Ohio State because I travel a lot - Some kids sold some of their stuff (against the rules) the coach found out about it and didn't tell the NCAA - even though he had several chances to admit he knew. That is it. The car thing went no where. Nothing else alleged turned out to hold any water - at least to this point. There was no cheating in recruiting. No booster network for extra benefits that turned up. Other coaches even said that Ohio State was never involved in dirty recruiting. Not even rumors. Coach Tressel messed up. Kept his mouth shut when he shouldn't have and didn't follow the rules he said he would follow. He lost his job. I think that is probably a fair punishment even though I still think Tressel has not gotten a fair rap in this. I think the AD should probably lose his job, but it doesn't look like he will. knowing how JT operates, I find it hard to believe that Smith knew nothing. (we will never know because Smith knowing would make it lack of institutional control and no one will come clean on this)
I don't believe Ohio State (the school) cheats - meaning I don't think they support, institutionally, giving extra benefits. I think that is why the kids are easy targets for guys who are willing. Ohio State gives them nothing extra. Being around Ohio State for years you hear things. I have never heard anything to do with the school cheating. I have heard things about boosters. Boosters have been caught and removed by the school. I am sure even today that some boosters are breaking some rules. I also believe that is the case almost every where. I also believe most schools try to stop it, but it is almost impossible.
I think Ohio State should be punish according to precedent. Nothing more nothing less. I have a feeling it will exceed the precedent.

Re: OSU could vacate wins
The problem here, is that innocent until proven guilty has been all but conceptually been thrown out in this country.
Ohio State is going to, likely, be punished for what hasn't been proven. ( it's hard to prove someone took cash for autographed merchandise, even with an eyewitness account; cash is harder to trace than bank transfers )
Ohio State, if hammered, will be a warning to all others who are accepting special benefits from boosters & such.
Made an example of, yes.
Stop with them . . . we'll see.
Oregon & North Carolina could get slammed just as easily. It would be the year the NCAA threw the iron fist down, and shows, nobody is safe.
Then they'd "possibly" back off over the next couple of seasons . . . possibly.

Re: OSU could vacate wins
I think Ohio State will get punished for what they did - the coach lied to the NCAA and that is the worst thing you can do in their eyes. The players selling their stuff to a memorabilia guy has been proven, admitted to, and punished. The NCAA and the Ohio attorney generals office found nothing about the car deals that made them different then many other deals those two dealerships did. They shouldn't be punished for that, so we will see. There were some other things that SI said happened that can't be backed up either, but that the rest of the media jump on as true. Lots of people still bring that stuff up when stating Ohio State's crimes. I think the very worst thing hasn't come out and won't be proven. I think the AD knew full well what was going on and he is going to walk.
I would be really surprised if there isn't a one or more year bowl ban and a lose of three schollies a year for two to three years. I'm not sure that is unfair.
