Rumor was Shannon hired, now it seems that may not have happened. I hope he does become the DC.

Beginning to think it is happening with Randy Shannon. Wikipedia has him as DC at Arkansas (I know that does not make it so). I am thinking this is a perfect hire, if it is so. Just waiting for the crawler on ESPN, but I am watching Around the Horn and PTI, both that I tivoed, so I am not at current time right now.

Randy is a better coordinator than head coach. I wonder if he will have some cachet recruiting Texas. The Dade County kids won't pay him much attention, I don't think.

Yeh, as defensive coordinator at THE U, he had a top 7 defense in the country 5 out of 6 years. Still uncertain, if it is going to happen. Arkansas currently recruits Florida, and I would assume that he will help.billybud wrote:Randy is a better coordinator than head coach. I wonder if he will have some cachet recruiting Texas. The reason Randy had a top defense those years was the jimmy's and joes. Miami defenders from those years now populate the NFL.
Guys like Calais Campbell, Baraka Atkins at DE...Five of his DT's now in the NFL, six linebackers, 10 defensive backs...
The reason Miami fell off was recruiting...maybe more so on the offensive side than defensive..but still some slide on defense.

I don't think you ever have top offenses or defenses without players. Recruiting is the key and then just don't screw them up.billybud wrote:The reason Randy had a top defense those years was the jimmy's and joes. Miami defenders from those years now populate the NFL.

Sounds now like Shannon will not be it, and Tyrone Nix name surfaces. Talk about penthouse to the outhouse. Released by So Carolina and has been at Ole Miss during the last years of Houston Nutt. Not impressive IMO.
One concern is that B Petrino maybe does not give the full reins to a DC and tries to control everything. I hope that is not the case.

Paul Haynes (Ohio State Co-Defensive Coordinator) hired by the Arkansas Razorbacks to be the Defensive Coordinator. Spence what can you tell us about him?

He is a Columbus boy, from DeSalles high school, which is on the north east side of Columbus. If you have ever been to Columbus, Desales is near Easton Mall near the airport. He is a helluva DB coach. He was considered a star and is an up and comer IMO. He has coached some very good guys in the backfield. This year was his worst showing in the secondary, but he was dealing with lots of 1st and 2nd year players. I hope he does well for Arkansas. He was worked under Heacock since coming to Ohio State and if he is as good a co-ordinator as he was secondary coach at Arkansas I think you will like him.

Sounds good. Arkansas is so close. If they can sure up the defense a bit they can really push Bama and LSU for the SEC West (and the overall SEC title).
I guess he had ties to Petrino, and John L SmithHaynes was on the staffs of John L. Smith at Louisville and Michigan State. He was on the Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2001 that included Bobby Petrino.

Tressels assistants have all been pretty successful with the exception of Mark Snyder. Haynes was very highly thought of and I always thought he did a good job. You never know how they may do as they climb the ladder, but I think Haynes is one of those guys who could end up in the NFL after a successful run at Akansas.

Re: Rumor....Ark fires DC Robinson and hires Stoops
I read where he has had some recruiting success in Georgia and Florida. This part of the coaching is a must. Good players make coaches look good.
I would still have rather had Shannon, but rumor was that he wanted 1.3 million and would have been the highest paid assistant coach in all of college football. This I think is a better choice than Tyrone Nix though.

Gus Malzahn makes 1.3 million a year at Auburn....he would have shared the highest paid assistant tag. That's a lot of money for an assistant....tons of head coaches do not make that much.

I have seen signs from Petrino (also Rich Rod and Dana H at WVU) that tells me this is true! But I think they "allow" the DC control, but it isn't given...they make them "earn" their trust I think. These guys build these 40 point offenses and I think they have nightmares that the D will mess it up..and it all starts there. DH almost totally ruined WVU's season...I have no proof, but I am about as sure as I can be from what my eyes saw.

Dana Holgorsen is the head coach...and OC. He has no need for an OC since he will always run his offense.
