Re: NCAA cracking down....maybe shrinking rulebook
The only thing for sure I can say Spence, is that it is ONE step forward. With all of these rule amendments in mind, the enforcement will have to match up to the speed level claimed by Emmert in the NCAA's statement.
There is a great misnomer afoot that every university athletic program is profitable. Southern Miss' program is in the hole to the tune of $1M+. There are others that lose money each year, but nowhere near the degree of USM. They'll take a modest loss if it means good promotion for the university. If a stipend would be enforced, I could imagine the Sun Belt, Mountain West, MAC and C-USA somehow having to align into a non-stipend subdivision of D-I. There isn't as much $ floating around in those schools as in the power conferences. If they stay in FBS, count on the cost of the "money games" going up; it would have to in order for the small schools to do the road trips and be able to pay stipends. I also believe that if stipends are in order, there should be a sliding scale upward in pay rate from freshman to senior so that there is extra incentive to stay in school.
I believe that the penalty for offending coaches seems soft in the proposal. A one week suspension from coaching won't scare coaches to fly right. One year (without pay and some recruiting/scholarship restrictions) would have greater effect.

Stipends are long overdue. There are good student athletes not being able to accept scholarships because they do not have the money for incidentals and general living expense. Non working rules of the NCAA means, if they don't get the money from savings, or parents....they can not come. Money can not come from outside sources as boosters.
Do I think there is money to do this. Yes...spit in the bucket for most schools. If it is an issue for some schools, then they maybe should be at a different level. Or...go back to the way it was where these things were not issues.
Emmert has been disappointing to me. But there is no doubt if you want schools to comply, take away the money. Ban TV rights for a couple of years and limit the sale of razorback nostril clips.....Say Doss,,,,what is with that.

I agree. If you take away the brass ring from offending schools, you should all but eliminate institutional cheating. Players taking money is a different thing. The stipend would help that, but there are always going to be guys willing to take money and goods from people who offer. I think that needs to be addressed in a different way. I have no sympathy for the university employees who are cheating. They are getting a pay check - direct money.

Re: NCAA cracking down....maybe shrinking rulebook
I have been trying to understand this work thing for scholarship athletes. The examples I have read have had to do with video games and such. Now what if a enterprising young man or lady has started their own business (for example I have a dog walking business). If I continue my business where ever I'm going to school would the NCAA have an ax to grind with me or the school I'm playing for? This doesn't have to be limited to this idea another thing I was good at as a kid/teenager was lawn mowing and chain saw blade sharpening. I grew up in a neighborhood where everyone had a fireplace or a wood burning stove. So I learned how to sharpen axes and chain saw blades, not real handy here in Hawaii, but I could make some money if I was at school some where else. Would something like this cause a problem? I'd hate to think that making money is only for the schools and the NCAA and they have forgotten why the kids are there to get an education!
Re: NCAA cracking down....maybe shrinking rulebook
Yes, you are right. Athletes can not hold jobs while on scholarship. They can not receive outside income. I have linked an article that is a couple of years old, but still in affect. Please note it is all right for the athlete to get food stamps and welfare, just not work. (I should note, during the season of play, it would be impossible for a player to hold a job. Football players, almost all, cut their class load to minimum during the season, just not enough time. Between meetings, weight room, practice and just being pooped...not much time left. Giving athletes stipends, about 300 bucks a month would help, literally thousands of kids to attend school that can not now. It would not stop individual greed and wrong doing, but punishing the ninety and nine for the one does not make sense.

PS....You were an industrious young man. Please do not disillusion me by telling us you are now doing anything but lying on the sun laden beaches and soaking up the good life, 24/7.

I'm not working right now as I had a heart attack in May, before that I was a cook in an Italian Restaurant in Waikiki. I saw my Cardiologist a couple of weeks ago and he said I looked good and could go back to work again, but I'm not going back to a restaurant kitchen. I'm looking at going to Petco since I love working with dogs. What's scary is I'm only 48! Thanks for the enlightenment of what these kids are going through.

Warrior....Sorry to hear about your issue. But just follow the Doc's orders. Going to work at a job you really like, does a world of good to stay healthy. Best Wishes.

Mahalo, don't worry my wife keeps a closer eye on my heart than I ever could!
Re: NCAA cracking down....maybe shrinking rulebook
Warrior.....keep up with your exercise and stay with the healthy foods...I hope that any heart damage that you had was minor.
I had a wake up call a few years ago myself...and now my doctor has given me notice that I am sliding and need to get back to my eating plan and exercise...
I wonder if, since you are young for an attack, you have family history. My mother died of a massive attack at 62 and had a diseased heart. I ran along ignoring that, not even knowing my blood pressure (turned out dangerously high) until I had my own appointment in Samarra.
Luckily, if your first doesn't cause lasting damage...exercise, diet, and medication if called for, will put you right back on life's treadmill.
I hope things continue to work out for you.

Yeah, some people don't get a wake up call. Hopefully the lifestyle change works out. It is probably good you are out of the kitchen. Italian is hands down my favorite food, but the sauces, oils, enriched pasta's, breads, along with the pork sausage and shellfish can be rough on a guy's arteries.

Re: NCAA cracking down....maybe shrinking rulebook
Thanks Guys!
Yes I have learned the errors of not taking care of myself!, but it started long before the heart attack I just didn't know it . My grand parents between them had diabetes, grand dad died of colon cancer when I was 6 or 7 and they both had high blood pressure and I had been on blood pressure meds for 5 years. Then when I was in the hospital I found out from my mom that my father's family had a history of heart problems. So when she learned I was in the hospital she called to tell me all the family medical history, geeze I think I could have been happier not knowing ALL that! As for the Italian food! When I was working there every night was pasta, bread, and something! Now it's chicken, fish, veggies, and some diet fruit drink. Instead of coke ( 2 liters a day), 3 or 4 beers at work ( never have liked wine) and all the food, between tasting, experimenting and dinner. As far as the heart goes I have a great team, they went into my heart through a vein in my right wrist and put 4 stints into the main artery that brings the blood into my heart it had a 70% blockage. Whats really crazy is when I went to my doctor for a regular check up he took my blood pressure, then not saying anything he hooks me up to an EKG when it spits out the read out he asks how do you feel, I said good, he says you need to get to the hospital right now, I get to the hospital and show the read out to the first nurse I see next thing I know I'm on a gurney and all these people are hooking me up to all kinds of machines and a guy tells me you know you're having a heart attack? From what my doctors tell me I'm lucky to still be around! By the way, that if you have chest pains? They start most heart problem commercials with IT DOES NOT ALWAYS HAPPEN!! So get checked out!!
THANKS GUYS, SORRY FOR THE LONG RANT!

Warriorsfan, no need to apologize. Stay on the road to good health, so you can enjoy much college football and appreciate the little things you might not have noticed before on this planet now that you're given a new lease on life!

This may be nit picky by the NCAA...but it's a close shave. If it were up to me, this would be something I wouldn't enforce...if it happened once.
