For all of the cries out about fairness, parity, and because all other sports do it that way. espn is showing their true colors tonight.
They got what they wanted . . .
They pushed & beat it into your heads until the controversy could get no more blasphemous. They connived you into believing you wanted it. They rode the pony until it had no legs.
And now, tonight, espn shows their face.
The real reason for their playoff campaign.
$470 million a year, for 12 years.
That is the contract espn signed with the NCAA FBS for exclusive rights to showcase the playoffs, starting in the 2014 season.
There it is . . .
It was all to obtain more control over a sport that they forgot how to journal; only tabloid.

The American way...any other network could have outbid them...

I get the gist of what you say and it is true. Whether or not any one could outbid Disney/Hearst for TV rights for anything, may be doubtful. Ultimately, Disney, aka ESPN may have the right to kaboosh any deal of conference realignment. BYU would have to give a millions to give up their independent status and the ACC has a deal with ESPN until 2026.
Even in the farmland of the Willamette Valley, money talks and.....

As everyone knows, I am not a fan of playoffs. But if the schools cared as much about traditions as they do about standing in line to get their piece of the pie, we wouldn't lose our traditions. I believe the regular bowls, that ESPN loses money on, are going to be history very soon.
It is funny how academia deems capitalism a dirty word until it comes time to deal with TV networks and sports and then they embrace it with all of their being.

Sometimes birthrights and tradition are sold for a "mess of pottage;" other times they are sold for millions, maybe billions. Nevertheless, they are sold.

Which, I believe, is precisely what Disney is banking on.
Virtually impossible to outbid . . . with a say in the goings on of conferences.
Control the money of the sport . . . control the sport.
Welcome to the NCespn Football era (as of 2014).
