Please explain reception rule: Fl vs Fl St

Postby Dossenator » Sat Nov 24, 2012 5:44 pm

Watching Fl vs Fl St. Florida tight end caches ball in bounds, clearly has possession, takes two steps with possession in bounds, and as he is falling to ground out of bounds the defender strips the ball. Was ruled a catch on field. Reviewed and overturned.

I am confused.

Florida is dominating this game. However only up by 6.

Fl St just does not have the offense to compete against a top defense and Fl St defense is just gassed. This is about to get ugly.

This is a must stop for Fl State.

Fl St stopped Fl but they only have 54 total yards and 2 first down with less than a minute in first half left.

I hate the prevent defense. Fl St could not move ball all first half until last 1 minute and then Fl defense looks like Swiss cheese.

It's a ball game again.

Amazing how one team can dominate for one whole half and now the tables have turned.

Amazing Fl St is even in this game with 4 turnovers.

I can tell both teams are really good, but both are flawed to varying extents. Florida is good in the same way Ohio State is good. They don't turn the ball over much and they play very good defense. Ohio State has the better offense, I think that's obvious, but Florida definitely has the better defense. The Gators can't run away from Florida State for the same reason they couldn't run away from UL Lafayette, Missouri, or Bowling Green. Their offense simply won't allow them to. They were getting yards on the ground, but that wasn't going to last forever and the 13 points were mostly the result of turning the ball over.

Florida State on the other hand has had EJ Manuel play poor in key situations over the course of the season. His games against NC State and Virginia Tech stood out to me, although in the latter he made the right throw at the right time. So far he's doing a good job of rectifying those early turnovers with the giant run at the end of the first half and the beautiful touchdown pass.

One player I don't like and think has no future in big time college football is Jeff Driskel. I know he's going up against a very good defense in Florida State, but I can't see Florida becoming a two-dimensional, productive offense with him behind center. I know he's a sophomore, but I don't see a whole lot to work with. He's got 10 TDs vs. 3 INTs, so Muschamp isn't asking him to do much, and with good reason.

Home cooking in. Terrible call. Should have been pass interference on Fl St not Fl. Maybe refs are making up for bad calls in other games.

More home cooking, helmet to helmet personal foul not called on FSU. FSU have the refs on their team tonight. Terrible officiated game. I could care less who wins. I just want the game to be fair for both teams. They better not call Florida for a helmet to helmet the rest of game.

I have seen at least 2 face masks not called both by Fl St defenders on Fl running backs.

Let me guess: ACC refs.

I think the helmet-to-helmet rule is for defenseless players only. I think that would only include sliding players, receivers in the air, quarterbacks in the pocket, and players who are in the process of being tackled. I wonder if that's why it wasn't called. I actually don't know the entire scope of what "defenseless" is defined as in the college game.
