Miami U.-The NCAA investigates its investigators

It's safe to say that the NCAA is going to have to stand pat for awhile concerning investigating "The U". Two self-imposed bowl bans are now sufficient.

The NCAA had the booster and Canes' football cooked if they only looked at an original Y! report on this a year and a half ago.

Looks like the investigators at Miami handled it improperly while investigating Miami.

What we need is the FBI to investigate the NCAA over the improper use of court room subpoena power to question witnesses about the U unrelated to what that court case was.

The only thing here, is, Miami turned themselves in as soon as they found out something wasn't right . . . which was 10 months before Y! Sports reported their story.

Unlike many of the schools who get the anvil dropped on them, the `Canes haven't been attempting to hide information, instead, have been as compliant as possible with the investigation.

As long as there were coaches involved I don't think it matters. Ohio State compliance are the ones who found out about the tatoo thing with the players and found out that Tressel knew about it and they took it to the NCAA. Ohio State still got a years and the scholarship losses. I think if there is a school official or coach envolved, it may help ease the blow if you turn in yourself, but it doens't keep the hammer from slapping you in the face.

A few heads rolled at the NCAA; but, I am sure this is just a white wash. They'll now give themselves a clean bill of health (we're perfect again) and go on erratically enforcing rules just when the feel like it and ignoring other violations.

They need a wholesale change in attitude when it comes to enforcement. They need to start punishing the people getting paid.

It is difficult to punish people who no longer come under the auspices of the NCAA...and some of whom are NFL millionaires.

The main culprits are long gone. And, I do believe that a program that knows and abets should be punished enough so that it hurts.

Additionally, Miami actually made money by voluntarily giving up two crappy bowls....they got a full share of the conference's bowl split while costing the conference the revenue from the bowls.

It cost FSU a net $478,000 to play in the CCG against a 7-6 fill in (Miami stayed home) and FSU lost even more money playing in the Orange Bowl. Miami netted a bunch more than FSU just by not playing.

I say "rip some schollies for a decade".....(well, they are our recruiting rival in South Florida..LOL)

I hate to agree with Donna Shalala about anything, but Miami has been punished as far as I'm concerned. Maybe they drop three scholarships a year for three years. Past that, they have been punished.

What will the NCAA be punished? Seems to me this happened on Emmert's watch. He should be punished for lack of control. Time to lead by example.

Punished? how?

Voluntarily giving up two very miserable bowls? And actually making more money from the conference than if they had gone?

FSU had some athletes passing around a cheat sheet on an open book exam on an internet course and they got worse than Miami has...FSU voluntarily held out half of their players and took their bowl loss...lost schollies for three years.

If Miami coaches really did furnish benefits, if a booster furnished benefits, if Miami coaches did lie to the NCAA...they deserve much more than what little they have been punished.

Having Shapiro hanging around the locker room, sidelines, being given preferred access to athletes, handing big checks to Shalala, having the equipment manager as the "bag man"...it all adds up to LOIC....

I'll tell you what...if the NCAA backs down on punishment to the Canes....the rest of college football (especially the SEC) will play hard ball dirty recruiting.

The NCAA will have been reduced to an overweight night watchman with a dim bulbed flashlight, feet up on a desk snoring while the crooks empty out the warehouse.

Did they give up the bowls before the season or during? That would be key for me. If they did it before the season then I don't care about the result of the season. If they gave them up after they had tanked the season, that is different. I wouldn't mind them giving the coaches and Shalala a show cause penalty.

An FSU employee was involved which is why they got hit. Same with Ohio State. The original penalty was some kids traded memorabilia and autographs for tattoos. Not that big a deal. When it was found out by compliance that the coach knew(not to mention lied about knowing) was what made it bad.

If Miami banned themselves the right way - meaning before the seasons started- I don't think the results of the season matter. Also the fact that they made money by not going to a bowl game is also irrelevant. Most teams lose money by playing in a bowl game. At least on paper. Bowl games are fund raising tools. That is where the money is made at a bowl game. Ohio State didn't get their bowl share from the conference either. I think that is fair, but that would be up to the ACC.

The way the NCAA acted in this case was equally as bad as the school. Miami should have to pay a price, but I believe the people getting paid- the coaches, Donna Shalala, and any other school employee should be fired with a show cause penalty. The ACC should also step up and hit them financiall -as was done with the Big Ten with Ohio State and Penn State. What Miami self imposed should be given weight when punishment is handed out. Emmert should also lose his job with a show cause penalty for the NCAA's actions in investigating this case. It is hard to enforce rules when the enforcers do not follow the rules either.

During the season.....

FSU had to bite the bullet and pay for the unsold tickets to the CCG game with GT that nobody wanted to go to.....with a 6-6 season in 2011 and after three straight losses in 2012 (including to FSU), Miami knew that they would most likely have another loss to FSU and a crummy bowl...

On November 19, 2012, after loss #5 to Virgina, they said..."no, we'll forfeit the title game and bowl".

November freeking 19th.....slam 'em NCAA!
