Yeah, I agree it should count then. It isn't a legit punishment if you do it after the season starts. That is just thumbing you nose at the rules. The ACC needs to pull their bowl money. If that is how it went down then Shalala should be fired for being so arrogant.
They are going to lose scholarships. Probably 4 or 5 a year. That and a bowl ban will knock Miami back to the Stone Age. They are too small a school to get pummeled like SC or Penn State did and recover very quickly. Their endowment is only like 500 million.

Re: Miami U.-The NCAA investigates its investigators
My big problem with all of this is that the institution that is enforcing the rules is no better than the teams breaking the rules.
If the allegations are true Then every one at the school from the president on down is guilty of things that are as bad as anything SMU ever did. Not only is it lack of control, it is knowingly turning a blind eye institutionally. But how do you know it is all true or is lots of it manufactured by the NCAA? How can an institution as disfunctional as the NCAA be trusted to preside over the rules when they can not themselves follow the rules? Their own rules even?

Re: Miami U.-The NCAA investigates its investigators
This is kind of how I feel about the NCAA and the Miami situation. I realize that Miami probably did most things they are being accused of, but the NCAA is even more wrong. They insist kids who don't make money, to follow the rules of ethics. They insist the schools follow the rules of ethics. They don't follow the rules. Not at all. If any institution is in need of a total over haul for lack of control, it is the NCAA.

Re: Miami U.-The NCAA investigates its investigators
Official notice of allegations for Clint Hurtt (while at Miami) arrived yesterday at UL Football HQ. Administration is saying lets see how it goes with the NCAA (before deciding what to do with him). Hurtt has gotten a lawyer and intends to fight at least some of the allegations if not the whole general thing.
And, with all the counter claim lawsuits coming out of Miami against the NCAA this could take years to solve.
Not sure what, if any, effect this might have on Clint Hurtt's recruiting. I would guess they will have Coach Strong to do more of the closing for recruits so they will transfer relationships to him.
Who knows?

The NCAA continues to appear unethical in this matter. The replacement investigator is also allegedly not above board:

The NCAA might have used some questionable means to find out the truth....but that doesn't mean that the truth about Miami is washed away.
It's like a cop who catches a mass murderer by looking in his car without probable cause....it doesn't make the guy any less of a mass murderer.
Miami was crooked...very crooked.

And it is not a criminal trial......take those schollies away, away, take those scholies away.
(of course, as an FSU guy, I am neutral in all of this).

While I agree the truth was probably what was uncovered, the NCAA chould not be aloud to break the rules to find the truth. There is lots wrong with it. What if the next step is to make up what they believe to be the truth. It isn't what you think or even know to be true, it is what you can prove. And what you can prove with evidence obtained within the rules and laws. The NCAA has painted with a broad to long. It is time to fix them, then worry about Miami.

Re: Miami U.-The NCAA investigates its investigators
UL's Clint Hurtt given leave from coaching to take care of the NCAA/Miami allegations against him. And, I heard Miami took a dose of steroids, got some bigger balls, and is counter suing the NCAA. And, if Miami's problems disappear in a lawsuit, then, maybe, Hurtt's disappear too.

I do not like the word, disappear . . .
Miami should be punished; but for what they did. Not what they have been alleged to have done.
That is the bigger problem here.
When all of this came out, initially, shapiro claimed over 70 Miami football players, five basketball players, and a Basketball coach (said to have been present when shapiro offered a kid money on a Visit to the recruits hotel room) . . .
Now, less basketball players, no longer a definitive number of football players, no more talk of the basketball coach (who no longer is associated with the University), and new allegations citing the knowledge of wrong doing by an assistant football coach . . .
I'm annoyed by all of this.
Ban us from another two bowls, fine . . . By the way; Miami had stated prior to the start of last season that they may enforce another bowl ban on themselves . . . the media continued mentioning it weekly, as well, the commentators brought it up several times during every one of Miami's games.
Yes, the official word did not come from the AD's office until two weeks before the end of the season . . . but everyone at the University (including the players) knew before the season began.
That being said; I think what needs to happen, is, coaches who were involved (there needs to be proof shown) should be outed across the board (not just at Miami) . . .
Any administrator, coaching staff member, team official who may have had knowledge, or hid evidence/covered up messes should be immediately dismissed (regardless of where they may be working now), and banned permanently from employment at the collegiate level (I would not want kids going to a school with such a person as an authority figure in that environment).
I feel the punishment should fit the crime . . . do not punish kids who could potentially benefit from earning an athletic scholarship.
Instead; hit Miami were it really hurts.
Have the University pay back all of its revenue garnered by guilty athletic programs, between the dates of illicit activity (as proven through legitimate means).
Every bowl appearance, every televised game (which is all of the games for the football team), even ticket sales for home games (remember; at the start of all of this, Miami still had sellout crowds).
Take that money, and divide it up among the other schools who were members in-conference for those years in question (excluding any school who also had major NCAA infractions).
You wanna send a message, do it right.
And say; if you do anymore nonsense like this - we're gonna take you off of tv broadcasts for 2 years.
.
As for the NCAA; I think Spence may be right . . .
You want everyone else to play by the rules, then, you gotta follow them, too.
The Collegiate body or conference committees need to step up, and put the NCAA in their place. Remind them, that the only reason the NCAA exists in the first place, is because these schools let them.
If the NCAA steps out of line, pull your funding for a season.
That would keep their line in tow for a while.

The NCAA shouldn't except a self punishment in November as a punishment. You have to do it before the games start.
