is the Big East going to survive?

Postby Swamp Daddy » Thu Mar 07, 2013 10:12 am

The Big East will virtually split in half for next season beginning with football. The so-called Catholic 7 (basketball only schools) have decided to split off from the footbally playing teams. So far it appears they will get the name? Who knows what will be what when the dust settles. UL, Cincinnati, Rutgers and a bunch of newcomer football teams will be left holding the bag and in a (so-far) no name league for one more year when many of them will also leave for greener pastures (football stadiums) so to speak.

Also, this being the last year of the current BCS contracts (2013-14 football), further changes will no doubt happen. Has league swapping hit a new peak, or is there more to come?

The Big East will survive as a no football conference.

Yep;

unless there is some div 1AA build, there will be nothing else.

The Big East will be dead in Div 1A.

The current Big East is going to rebrand as the "America 12" or something along those lines. Once 16 team super conferences hit, Cincy will be gone to the Big 12 or the ACC and UConn, with their basketball prowess, could be ACC bound. USF will get the short end of the stick as far as football goes.

I think the America 12 can be sustainable enough for a football conference, but it's a "mid-major" at this point. It's basically C-USA and I assume that once Rutgers, UL, Cincy, and UConn leave, they'll just finish it off by adding Southern Miss, Marshall, and Tulsa. I could see them maybe poaching Northern Illinois, but that's the only MAC school that makes sense since most programs don't offer much financially. NIU gives them the Chicago area. UMass would be a stretch since the America 12 virtually has no northeast presence anymore, but it would give them that area.

Well, it looks as if the Catholic 7 will keep the Big East Name. Not sure what the other teams will play in. Supposedly, the BE Commissioner doesn't want a name (America 12) with a number in it. With all the conference musical chairs this might be a wise move. I vote for Leftover East myself. I hope MD finds a way to leave the ACC early so we can slip in early.

The whole merry go round is flying apart...

Louisville may have a brass ring for a free ride on the ACC merry go round....but some of the ponies may be missing.

I hope not...but consolidation is the way of business be it banking, automobiles, or football.

I wonder where the ACC direction will take us now . . .

The "Old Guard" has gotta be stewing with Miami as the Conference Champion in Basketball.
