Week 7 Predicted Upsets

Postby donovan » Sat Oct 12, 2013 11:05 am

Hour before kickoff somewhere....so I am giving my last minute upset predictions against my predilections.

Utah State over Boise State
Oregon State over Washington State
Utah over Stanford....I am okay with this one
Texas over Oklahoma...no weasel in this fight.

I think Texas can beat Oklahoma today. Even though I went with the Sooners, I can't say I'm overly confident.

I noticed that most of the country is picking Wisconsin to beat Northwestern. When I took Wisconsin on Sunday, I was under the impression that in all actuality, it would be a mild upset and I still feel that way.

Not quite an upset when you are a 10 point favorite.

I know, I just think the spread is a little out of whack. 10 points seems like a ton to me. I think Northwestern has a better team. I'm picking Wisconsin in what I consider to be an upset.

Oh, okay, my upset is Alabama. I think they have been very lucky and Kentucky is way under rated.

I think Wisconsin's lines will wear down Northwestern and the Badgers will run at will by the 3rd quarter.

Donovan, you misunderstood, I was saying that I am picking Alabama as the winner and saying that would be an upset in my mind, as Eric is doing with his Wisconsin pick. Just trying to say, that if a team is favored, picking them because you think they should NOT be favored, does not qualify as an upset pick.

I think Bama wins, not sure they will cover the 25 pt line, but if I had to wager, I would lay the points.

I usually think of an "upset" as a team beating another team that is better than they are. Last week, Virginia was favored to beat Ball State, but Ball State beat Virginia by 21. This is technically an upset according to the spread, but I don't, and didn't prior to the outcome, consider that an upset in actuality since I think Ball State is better than Virginia in a vacuum. Spreads don't operate in a vacuum though and they take different things into account (like momentum, home field advantage, weather, etc.).

Now if you want to have a dialogue with other people about what counts as a "valid" "upset pick", then using spreads are usually a good way to go since they are delineated in a simple way. But I can have my opinion, and so can you about Alabama. But one is probably more defensible than the other, even though Northwestern is getting trounced  . It's not the first time I've been wrong about something  . I'm not taking "credit" for picking Wisconsin as an upset, just saying that, through my personal lens prior to the outcome of the game, I thought of it as an upset. The way the game is turning out right now though, it looks like Wisconsin has the matchup in their favor.

And I really seriously wasn't calling a win by Bama an upset. Now if Arkansas beats Bama next week, that will be a true upset.

I think Wisconsin is probably the second best team in the Big Ten.

Also, if Iowa beats anyone on the remainder of their schedule, besides Purdue, those will also be classified as upsets.

In my mind, if a spread is 3 points or less it cannot be a legitimate upset.

If anyone noticed the Wisconsin game was on when I made my comment, I had just got off a plane from Dallas so I hadn't seen any football today. It looks now that Wisconsin is going to beat NW by 40+ points.

I guess the oddsmakers weren't confident enough in Wisconsin

How about Utah? Donovan the Soothsayer is at it again

For the record, Donovan bet Spence in early 2007 that Appalachian State would beat Michigan. Although it may have been in jest, I don't know how that happens. . You haven't paid up in CFP Bucks yet, Spence  .

Donovan came very close to predicting a w ashington win today. It could have ruined his reputation. 8)
