Sad...very sad. I hate this.

Postby billybud » Thu Feb 17, 2011 8:08 am

The famous oak tree's at Auburn's Toomer's Corner (where Auburn fans go before and after games) have been poisened and it has been determined that they will die. A Bama fan called into a radio show and said that he had poisened the trees....

Tests have determined that the pesticide that he named was used and that, indeed, the trees are doomed. A very heated rivalry now has the potential to turn ugly. I do hope that most Auburn guys realize that this was just one very misguided Bama guy.

sad...so very sad.

Auburn's reply...

Jay Gogue, President, Auburn University"We will take every step we can to save the Toomer's oaks, which have been the home of countless celebrations and a symbol of the Auburn spirit for generations of Auburn students, fans, alumni and the community."

"It is understandable to feel outrage in reaction to a malicious act of vandalism. However, we should live up to the example we set in becoming national champions and the beliefs expressed in our Auburn Creed. Individuals act alone, not on behalf of anyone or any place, and all universities are vulnerable to and condemn such reprehensible acts."

Bobby Poundstone, President, Auburn Alumni Association "Thousands of Auburn alumni have fond memories of rolling the trees at Toomer's Corner to celebrate sports victories, and the Auburn Alumni Association naturally supports the university in its efforts to safeguard the trees' health. These mighty oaks have been through a lot over the years. We're cheering for them."

"Whatever happens to the trees, our response to the situation as alumni will be a measure of our commitment to the Auburn Creed. As an organization, we will continue to act and react in a manner that befits the integrity of our alma mater, and we trust that all Auburn alumni will do the same. I am confident the Auburn family will rally in response to this senseless act in a positive and meaningful way and, as always, the Auburn spirit will endure."

Bill Ham, Jr., Mayor, City of Auburn"On behalf of the citizens of Auburn, I am deeply saddened by the news that someone has poisoned the Toomer's Oaks. Over the years, these beautiful old trees have come to represent the Auburn tradition and spirit. While this unfortunate act affects our entire community, I encourage my fellow citizens to move forward in the Auburn spirit. I have the utmost confidence in our police as they investigate this incident, and in the Auburn University experts fighting to keep these historic oak trees alive. Let's all wish them the best as they pursue their work."

It shouldn't have happened. This is not in the spirit of rivalry. You do not detroy property as part of a prank. I hope the guy who did it gets caught. There is a paper trail for the selling of certain herbicides so hopefully they find him and put him in jail. I am sure most Bama fans would denounce this behavior. If someone did that to the Buckeye grove, it would be devastating. I'm sure it is the same for Auburn. I don't know where people get it their mind that destroying someone else's property is funny. It is not.

Good. I hope he has a good long time to think about what a stupid thing he did. Those trees can't be replaced in a lifetime.

One of the rules of war that many of us learned and history has repeated stories, if you destroy the enemies icons...all you do is gird up their wrath.

I hope they give him a 400lb Auburn fan for a cellmate that "thinks he's purdy."

Pretty sad state of affairs. I can't wait to see what looney defense is given assuming the evidence is overwhelming.
The preceding statements are solely the opinion of GoBoilers and are, therefore, probably not based whatsoever on fact, research or more time in thought than what was required to physically type them. They're probably correct anyway, so you shouldn't argue too much, because otherwise he'll just blather on forever. On the internet Al Gore invented.

Tough to get a jury in Alabama....if you aren't a Bama fan, you're an Auburn fan. Neither could sit.
