At Oregon State. Fred Thompson dies of apparent heart attack. You just hate to hear things like this about kids so young. RIP Fred.

Why are there so many football players with heart issues (I would assume that's what this is)?

Most likely an enlarged heart. While not common it is common enough with athletes to be called athletic heart or athletic bradycardia.
