Recruiting 2013

Postby Eric » Sat Jan 05, 2013 9:18 pm

Man, now that Michigan seems to be turning something of a corner, recruiting is actually becoming fun! Well, not really. My attitude towards recruiting is, "I'll believe it when I see it." I have a good idea of who's coming in and what's expected, but I have a hard time buying into preseason recruiting rankings. A lot of them fail classes, a lot of them wind up transferring, and others end up being total busts while guys who aren't heralded out of high school often find their way on the field. You get big schools littered with good-but-not-difference-maker types and they're as interchangeable as the next guys, so they don't stand out to me and they lose to teams like Boise State who only haul in 3-star projects that always seem to work out. I wait until I see the on-field product in order to judge guys and that serves as a filter for the good players and the average ones.

But, I do think with the way that Hoke is recruiting that Michigan is pretty close to Big 10 title contention. Obviously Ohio State will be a problem to deal with, but I am thinking that Michigan will win the Big 10 this season (and trust me, I don't often do that; I don't remember the last time I predicted them to win the Big 10). I love what I've seen from Devin Gardner and he was coached to be a wide receiver until soon after the midway point in the season. Given a full offseason to coach him and harness his athletic ability, I think we're good at the QB position. And I think Hoke's guys on the offensive line and on defense will be somewhat green, but talented. But, that has to do with past recruiting and not the upcoming season.

I just made this thread for you guys to talk about your recruiting classes for the upcoming season. :D

We missed on a good wide receiver today, but Buckeye recruiting has been pretty good considering we are three scholarships down for a couple more years. I always take recruiting with a grain of salt. Rarely do the players turn out to be who we thought they were in high school.

Yesterday Louisville Trinity High School (national high school champs according to some) Quick (one of the big 3 from there) announced he is going to UL (turning down Ohio State, Oregon and others) at the Army All American Bowl. One of his Trinity teamates will probably switch from UC to UL too.

Nothing like winning a big bowl game on TV to turn heads during recruiting. Imagine the tweets and emails the UL staff could sent out to those on the fence during and after that game. Only 15 scholarships available. But, with quality additions and the number of returning starters next year is probably going to be even better.

As you might suspect the Sugar Bowl win has changed last minute recruiting for UL. Two more transfers from UF will play next year. 4-star recruit De'Asian decommitted from WVU and committed to UL.

Miami 4-star CB Lamar Robbins thought to be a lock for Oklahoma will take a visit to UL. Strong and Hurtt are 10-star recruiters and may flip more people.

Two football players who transferred in to UL last off season, QB Zeke Pike and linebacker Jordan Whiting, are no longer with the program, not sure why. Perhaps because neither played a snap this season. About 7 slots left; and, 15 plus offers out there. Coach Strong is (has to be) a lot pickier due to the small number of slots left. Lots of big timers coming in this weekend (due probably to the Sugar Bowl win).

Mysteriously Zeke Pike back on the team (as opposed to the news in the last post); the big item today is the decommit of Jason Hatcher (part of the Trinity Trio of stars) from USC. He will maybe take a visit to Florida and UL:

http://www.thecardinalconnect.com/2013/ ... ting-turn/

Teammate Quick is already a UL commit plus QB from Trinity. If you believe it the USC coaches are in a panic and are pressuring Hatcher. They've had about 10 decommits in the last two weeks after the locker room brawl. Any one hear more about that?

I haven't heard, but Lane Kiffin is self destructing at USC and I don't look for him to turn it around.

Well Jason Hatcher decommitted from USC; but, still wanted 'out of town' and went to UK though I thought hometown UL had a shot at him. Coach Charlie Strong filled out his 2013 class with his 17th recruit, 4* Stacy Thomas out of Florida.

What many pollsters and prognosticators have probably forgotten are the prime transfers to UL from Notre Dame, Florida and Miami who sat out last year and are probably ready to prove a point this year. I bet they hated sitting out the Sugar Bowl win. These 4* transfers do not show up in class recruiting rankings.

Should prove Strong's best year yet.

have fun, Swamp Daddy

Well, now we are looking into the future of the program ...

..................... ..................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ....................

The Miami Hurricanes are starting off the 2014 recruiting cycle in a big way, with 5-star running back Joseph Yearby flipping his commitment from Florida State to UM.

Getting him to flip is huge for Miami, and the Hurricanes can give credit to new offensive coordinator James Coley in this situation. According to Kynon Codrington of Rivals.com, Coley was a big reason why Yearby flipped:

Miami (Fla.) Central running back Joseph Yearby has switched his commitment from Florida State to Miami, thanks in large part to new Hurricanes offensive coordinator James Coley.

Yearby told Rivals.com: "Coach Coley is a great guy. He was very happy when I committed. Once he took the job, I started looking at Miami harder. Plus it's a better situation for my family."

This is a marquee recruiting win for Al Golden and the Hurricanes for numerous reasons. The first and most obvious reason is the fact that Yearby is an extremely talented recruit.

He's ranked as the No. 5 running back in the 2014 class and he's the No. 4 ranked player from the state of Florida, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings.

Landing in-state recruits is an integral part of the success of any college football program. On that principle alone, Yearby is a major recruit for the Hurricanes. It's also worth noting that he goes to Miami Central High School, which is just about a half hour away from Coral Gables.

Recruiting success in-state is essential, but that statement is intensified when considering the competition within the state of Florida.

Regional in-state recruiting wins are just as important, so the fact that Miami was able to keep Yearby in the area is huge. Consider the fact the Hurricanes were able to steal Yearby away from Florida State, and you really get the full picture as to why this is such a monumental flip for Miami.

This flip could signify the beginning of a great recruiting cycle for the Hurricanes. The final factor to consider here is that talent begets talent. Now that one elite recruit has chosen Miami, other elite recruits around the area and even nationally will take notice.

The impact Yearby's commitment can have on the 2014 cycle is overwhelmingly positive for Miami, so this is a very notable recruiting win for the Hurricanes.

.................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ....................

This is exactly as printed above.

Not simply a good get ... but, a major flip; a take away from an instate rival.

Re: !Recruiting 2014!

Postby Cane from the Bend » Fri Mar 01, 2013 11:20 am

The above post I left was a Huge landmark for Miami ...

But; what of the rest of the ACC . . ?

2014 looks like it has the potential to become a turning point for the conference overall.

.................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ....................

5-star safety Quin Blanding is arguably the best safety recruit in the 2014 class, and he has just committed to Virginia.

This is a major recruiting win for Mike London and his staff, and it really is the perfect way for the Cavaliers to start off the 2014 cycle. This commitment is a marquee recruiting moment for Virginia, but it's also a huge statement by the ACC in general.

The ACC may not be on par with the SEC or Big Ten in terms of national football relevance or recruiting draw, but the conference is slowly but surely moving it's way back up that proverbial latter, and it's nearing "destination" status in regards to the 2014 class.

Much of that has to do with the makeup of this class in general, and Blanding is one of its top recruits.

At least for now, it looks as if he'll be playing ACC football.

Blanding is the No. 1 ranked safety in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He has terrific size at 6'2'' and 200 pounds, and he runs a 4.50 40 according to 247Sports. He has the size to play strong safety at the line of scrimmage, and he's quick enough to be a deep zone or sideline-to-sideline player.

The importance of his commitment can't be overstated for Virginia, but let's get back to the ACC outlook.

The 2014 recruiting cycle could end up being the year of the ACC, and Blanding's commitment to Virginia is a huge way to kick that off.

Blanding is one of three 5-star players from the state of Virginia alone, with No. 1 overall recruit Da'Shawn Hand and 5-star defensive tackle Andrew Brown also hailing from ACC country. Hand has Virginia Tech in his top five (247Sports) and Brown has programs like Virginia Tech, Virginia and Clemson listed as "warm interests" on his, amongst others.

If all three of those players play in the ACC, that would be a huge coup for the conference. But there's also another huge factor to think about here: the state of Florida.

Two of the state's three major schools are ACC programs, Florida State and Miami, and both schools are set up to have big years on the recruiting trail.

The Hurricanes just landed 5-star running back Joseph Yearby (who flipped from Florida State) and there are several notable 5-star recruits that have a high interest in Miami. 5-star running back Sony Michel is the big name and the Hurricanes are in his top six (Georgia and Notre Dame are the top two right now). Miami is also in the top two for 5-star offensive tackle Kc McDermott, the top four for 5-star receiver Ermon Lane and the top five four 5-star inside linebacker Kain Daub (along with ACC programs like Florida State and North Carolina)

Miami could very well be on the verge of making a return to prominence, and the program is undoubtedly a historic draw with elite recruits.

Speaking of drawing in elite recruits, Jimbo Fisher and the Florida State Seminoles are starting to make a habit of that. Fisher landed 5-star outside linebacker Matthew Thomas and flipped 5-star cornerback Jalen Ramsey from USC in the 2013 cycle. 2014 is shaping up to be just as good, if not better.

Florida State is in 5-star offensive tackle Damian Prince's top six and 5-star cornerback Jalen Tabor's top five. The Seminoles are also in the running for the aforementioned Daub, Lane and Michael.

Fisher and his staff have the chance to put together one of the best recruiting classes in the country in 2014, and that will only help improve the perception of ACC football. If Miami can start building something significant that would be another huge boost for the conference, and then there's always Dabo Swinney at Clemson, who is a big-time recruiter. Clemson is in the top two for 5-star inside linebacker Raekwon McMillian.

The "Big Three" of ACC football has the potential to have some major 5-star success in 2014, and of course there's bound to be a big pickup or two from North Carolina, Virginia Tech and let's not forget Virginia.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: talent begets talent.

Blanding committing to Virginia is a huge statement to the college football world, and that statement is that the ACC is a legitimate conference for elite college football recruits to consider. All the other recruits that I've mentioned with interest in ACC programs are helping to create that perception a well.

Where one elite recruit commits, others tend to follow.

ACC country is a huge target region for the 2014 class, and I expect that the conference as a whole will drastically improve talent wise on 2014's signing day.

When the talent level rises, so will the quality of football. By it's very nature, high-level football will attract high-level recruits and that's how a recruiting trend is formed.

That's the trend that I'm seeing for 2014, and it's one that very well could continue into future recruiting cycles.

.................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ....................

Here, we have a way of drifting back to topics about how team & conference strength seems to move in cycles.

If the Talent trend continues to flow in the direction of the ACC; we may have a new power league amassing in the next couple of years.

The Big Ten had its heyday, followed by the Big 12.
Right now, the SEC is the dominant force.

Though, like all things, that will change.
And that change could be coming soon.
