Hillis is tearing it up in the NFL this year with the Browns (has scored a TD in every game, and has a couple of 100 plus yard games....Hills and McFadden are both in the top 10 in total yards in the NFL thus year). And Michael Smith was on that team as well...a 1,000 yard back the year after the big 3 left for the NFL.

McFadden, Jones, Hillis, and Smith may be the best collection of backs on one team at the same time ever.

That's exactly what I was thinking too, Doss. With the way Hillis has played in Denver and in Cleveland in the NFL and McFadden with his bustout season in Oakland, that seems to lend credence to the fact that honestly, that probably was the best backfield in a long time, probably in the last 25 years at least.

Actually, Hillis accounted for much of the success of McFadden and Jones as primarily a blocker.

Not sure how a player does in the pros, is a factor in how they were in college. I think Ingram and Richardson compare very favorably to McFadden and Jones.

One of the all-time great total backfields was at Oklahoma with Billy Sims, Elvis Peacock, Kenny King and Thomas Lott. QB and 3 running backs. I got the opportunity to see them play in person in the Orange Bowl against the Lou Holtz Razorback team. That Sooner backfield did not have a very good night in the Orange Bowl losing to Arkansas 31-6. Probably the most greatest and most memorable game that I have ever attended.

How about Barry Sanders and Thurmon Thomas at Ok State.

Or Ronnie Brown and Cadilac Williams at Auburn.

Great tandems also, but who were the other two backs? QB and FB?

Pete Johnson and Archie Griffin weren't a bad college tandem.

Craig James and Eric Dickerson at SMU. I also saw them play in Fayetteville against the Hogs.

Of all the backfields you guys have mentioned...if nothing else, Razor just pointed out the 2 biggest mouths of the tandems!

I read today that Craig James was the last white guy to rush for 1,000 yard in a NFL season. Peyton Hillis only has to average 60 yards a game for the rest of the season to reach that mark.

Well the QB for Auburn during that time was Jason Campbell (starter for the Redskns for several years and now with the Raiders). That was the Auburn team that went undefeated.

True, I was just making the point that Hillis has shown his worth in the pros whereas he was just a fullback in college. Granted he did see an inordinate amount of touches and receiving opportunities than your ordinary fullback, but he didn't get the chance to shine as a pure RB at Arkansas. He's freaking ripped too

I think Hillis could lift a car over his head. Those arms of his look like deadly weapons. He ran over and through the Baltimore Ravens last week (and he may be the best receiver out of the back field). I bet Denver is wishing they did not trade him since they rank dead last in rushing this season.
